Diaper Cake

My friend, Janelle, is always making diaper cakes for friends baby showers and they turn out so cute. So I decided it was my turn to take a stab at the diaper cake for a sip-n-see I was throwing.

I think it turned out pretty good for my first one, and maybe next time I will build another tier but for my first one I tried to keep it simple. I will try my best to explain it to you without taking pictures of the step by step process since I forgot to do that. Next time though, I will be sure to take picture of the steps!

What do you need?
  • diapers - I used about 50 on this cake
  • ribbon (1 1/2 inches-2 inches in width)
  • regular sized rubber bands (or I used hair ties from Dollar Tree)
  • giant rubber bands (3-4)
  • A circle cutout of cardboard
  • Two baby bottles--one large and one small (for this cake you could get away with two small, as I had to take the top off my big one)
  • Fun baby items like a rattle, teething ring, stuffer animal, hair accessories, paci, etc.
  • Double-sided tape
Step 1: Cut out a circle from cardboard to serve as the base. Some suggest covering it with wrapping paper, but I used white cardboard so didn't find it necessary. I used a large serving plate to trace mine.

Step 2: Open the diapers long ways and roll them up, I started with the design end so it was white on the end that everyone would see. Once rolled, tie either a rubber band (or hair-tie) around the diaper. The looser the diapers the less amount of them you have to use. I learned this the hard way...

Step 3: Place tall baby bottle in the middle of the circle cut out and start stacking up diapers around it. Once their is a layer completely around the bottle take a large rubber band and place it around the layer.

Step 4: Start stuffing more diapers inside the rubber band to create a tight second layer.

Step 5: Create a 3rd layer on the outside of the rubber band and add another large rubber band to keep all the layers together.

Step 6: Add the second baby bottle on top of the old bottle and begin to make your first layer of diapers around it. Again placing a rubber band around the first layer and repeating step 4.

Step 7: Take your ribbon and cut it long enough to go around the base of the cake and the top layer of the cake. I used two different ribbons, but you can use whatever you want. Use double-sided tape to get the ribbon to stick to the diapers. I used several pieces all around the cake to keep it from falling off but don't use glue or anything like that because then the mom can't use the diapers.

Step 8: Decorate however you want! I used a rattle, a teether, a ribbon bow, a stuffed lamb and a hair bow I made. This part is really up to you so have fun with it! Pin It
