Size Does Not Dictate Our Beauty

I've decided to start posting a blog here and there about things I see in the news that provoke something deep inside of me. I've seen two things today that have had me thinking all day which is why I start this series now (feel free to come up with a catchy series title for me). I would have ranted about it on twitter but definitely not enough characters.

I get suckered into all the news stories on the Yahoo homepage. This one caught my eye, "Gabourey Sidibe Reveals the Terrible Advice She Got From Joan Cusack"

Here is the video that shares the advice she received:

First of all, Gabourey Sidibe handles the advice with such grace. I personally don't know that I could have been so sweet to say that I knew she meant well by giving me such advice. But then again I will never be as sweet as someone like her. I have loved watching her in the media over the past three years. She made me cry (and many others) when she gave her acceptance speech in the Academy Awards. She is truly someone our young girls should look up to and aspire to be like.

It's a disappointment to me that someone would think because of her size and/or color she would not be amazing at what she puts her mind to. Seriously, go read her acceptance speech. I really hope that she accomplishes her dreams of starring as a romantic lead. I hope that we as Americans start to see people like her as beautiful, as she truly is beautiful.

Size does not dictate our beauty.

I could sure use the positive attitude in which she views herself. I have been so caught up in losing weight lately not because it's healthy but because I feel so unattractive. I truly am trying to find myself beautiful as I am not as what I could be.

I love this quote by her, "I learned to love myself, because I sleep with myself every night and I wake up with myself every morning, and if I don't like myself, there's no reason to even live the life. I love the way I look. I'm fine with it. And if my body changes, I'll be fine with that."

(And can you please take a minute to fill out my reader feedback survey?)
