Coughing Relief

This past week we visited my sister and her family. Unfortunately her oldest got a really bad cough on Monday and was needing some serious relief. She had a really hard night of coughing Monday night so of course I sought the advice of my nurse aka my mother-n-law.

We talked about what dad used to do to us which worked but we absolutely hated it. He would come up get us out of bed and we knew instantly what that meant. I would literally try to hold my coughs in as if that will actually work just so I didn't have to do it. He'd turn the hot water on the sink on and let it get really hot. He'd grab a towel and make us bend over to breathe in the hot water and then put a towel over our heads so that we were only breathing in the hot water. Your back would start to hurt and you'd want to come up for fresh air but he'd push you back down. I am pretty sure we only had to do it for a few minutes, but at the time it felt like the longest few minutes of your life. We'd return to bed get lathered in Mentholatum and pass back out. As much as I hated it, it actually worked. And to an extent felt really good to breathe in the hot water and feel it almost killing the soreness in your throat.

However, we didn't really want to teach my niece that method because we never really enjoyed it. So we stopped at CVS for shower soothers and Vick's. We let her enjoy a nice long as hot as she could enjoy shower with the shower soother and then put Vick's on her feet with socks. She slept great!

In my texts with my mother-n-law she mentioned that the freezer had the same effect as the hot shower which is a way better middle of the night cure than waiting for the hot water to kick in. We thankfully didn't have to use it as she slept through the night peacefully. However, after sprinting through the backyard one afternoon and having a little coughing attack I sent her to the freezer. Instant fix!

Maybe one of these can help you if your little one gets a bad cough. Perhaps you have your own tricks? Share your family secret.
